5 Misconceptions About Gutter Cleaning

Misconception #1: My handyman or gardener can do just as good a job as a professional gutter cleaner

Many maintenance, handyman and even roofing companies offer gutter cleaning as a side service. This means it is not their specialty. They do not do this work “Day in, Day out” and do not have the right tools, experience and safety equipment to do a fast, thorough and safe job on your property. In fact many of these companies charge much more because it takes them a lot longer to do an inferior job because they do not have the right equipment on hand.

Misconception #2: I can remove leaves safely from a ladder

Working from a ladder is the cause of countless numbers of workplace and home-related injuries in Australia. If you are not trained and qualified to work safely on a tile roof, trying to clean your gutters from a ladder is not a recommended alternative. You or your family member can do a lot of damage to both yourself and your property, and the time you spend pulling out muck and grime by hand from every crevasse and downpipe can quickly eat up your whole weekend.

Misconception #3: One form of gutter cleaning is just as good as another

Many professional gutter cleaning services still use a pressure cleaner or leaf blower to clean out your gutters. In most cases this causes more mess and more long term damage than if you did nothing at all. Pressure cleaners and leaf blowers not only cause an enormous mess around your property; they also push the majority of the leaves and dirt straight into your downpipes causing even more blockage. Vacuum Technology gutter cleaning captures 99.9% of mess and can get deep into your downpipes for a really thorough clean. PorterVac have developed our own gutter specific high power, high performance vacuums to provide the most thorough clean of any company in the industry.

Misconception #4: Having the right equipment is all a gutter cleaning company needs.

Yes…having the right equipment is important. But training and experience in the use of that equipment is what separates a gutter clean that captures only the visible dirt and debris in your gutters from a clean that sucks deep into your downpipes, gets in and under tiles, and removes 99.9% of mould, leaves, dirt and grime from your entire guttering system. All our technicians at PorterVac are qualified roof tilers and have had specialist training in the use and maintenance of our high power vacuum gutter cleaners.

Misconception #5: If my gutters cause water damage my insurance will cover it

This most definitely is not always the case. In my 17 years in the roofing industry I have seen many cases when insurance companies refused to pay for water damage because it was deemed that blocked and dirty guttering was the cause of the problem. Protect yourself from nasty and expensive surprises by checking your insurance policy and having your gutters professionally cleaned on a regular basis.
