How To Safely Climb A Roof

There may be times where you need to get up on your roof due to noticeable problems from the ground. Before climbing it is very important to ensure you have the right equipment. It is recommended that you have a ladder that is suitable for the height of your wall, breaking strain rope, comfortable shoes with good grip, and also a safety harness. Although it may seem a bit excessive, it is very important to make sure you are not risking your safety when climbing a roof.

Here are some useful steps to make sure you can successfully climb your roof without any safety problems.

  1. To get on top of your roof, you’ll need to use an extension ladder. It is important to ensure the ladder is extended 1m higher than the gutter or roof. it is also essential to make sure that the angle of ladder is ‘4 in 1’ meaning that for every 4m you go up, you come out 1m from the line of the gutter. Make sure you also always face the ladder, do not overreach and keep 3 points of contact with it at all times (hand on the stile and both feet).
  2. Make sure you are wearing a harness connected to a safety rope that is securely anchored.
  3. Tie the safety rope to a fixed structure such as a tree or even the house. It is important to use a knot that is strong but easy to undo, such as a bowline knot.
  4. Put on the safety harness you have and make sure it is properly adjusted to fit you. To put it on you should step through the leg holes, bring it over your shoulders and do up the chest buckle.
  5. Before climbing the ladder, reach out to the rope and pull on it so it is taut. Make sure you tie a knot and then hook the harness through the loop.
  6. You are now ready to climb the ladder and go onto the roof safely. While you are on the roof make sure you only walk on metal roofs, on front of roof tiles that are thick and supported by timber underneath. Make sure you keep your balance and that your movements are not too fast. The harness is only there as a last resort, so make sure you are still being wary of your safety.
  7. Reach further up the rope and tie a second knot. Make sure you are balanced so you can unclip the harness from the first knot you made and clip it into the second one. Carefully continue up the roof while you unclip and re-clip. It is best not to pull on it as it is there only if you slip.

How To Know When to Clean Your Gutters

There are a number of ways to identify when it is finally time to get your roof gutters cleaned:

Damp and mould

Mould can start to grow inside and out of your home, due to water overflowing from a roof gutter.

Leaky roofs and saggy ceilings

Water can also leak from you roof into ceiling cavities, which may cause them to sag and also collapse.

Splash back damage

The area exposed to the splash back of water suffers from penetrating damp, paint being peeled, and wood behind the wall is also damaged.

Rotting wood

The wood behind your walls can start to rot, as the water from clogged gutters may break down and decompose the wood.

Cracks in the foundation

Blocked gutters can also force water to flow directly onto the foundation wall of your home, which can cause mould growth and major cracking.

Ruined landscaping

Blocked roof gutters can destroy expensive landscaping as the water can cause holes to occur, which results in over watered plants and unsightly dips in the topography of a yard.

Insects

Insects and others pests may also occur inside and outside your home due to the build up of debris and mould caused by blocked gutters.

9 Questions You Must Ask Any Gutter Cleaner Before Hiring

Question # 1: Are your staff fully insured and qualified?

Working at heights can be dangerous. If someone who is not insured gets hurt on your property you could be in all sorts of legal hot water. Plus if your home is damaged because of negligence on the part of the contractor you will be left with the repair bill if the contractor was not insured. Never hire a gutter cleaner who is not insured.

Question # 2: Are your staff fully qualified?

It takes a lot of training and experience to work safely and productively on pitch roofs. People who are not quailed roof tilers can cause a lot of damage to your roof tiles by stomping around and not knowing the right places to stand. You must ensure that anyone who will work on your roof is fully qualified. All Porter Vac gutter cleaners are fully qualified roof tilers and have at least 5 years experience in the roofing industry. So you can be sure the people on your roof know what they are doing.

Question # 3: Do you inspect the roof while you are cleaning out the gutters?

Often many expensive repairs on your roof can be avoided by having a regular inspection. Because Porter Vac gutter cleaners are qualified tradesmen we provide a complete onsite roof inspection every time we clean your gutters. This means many small issues can be fixed on the spot and more serious problems can be diagnosed and seen to before they become expensive and time consuming to fix.

Questions # 4: What will you do if your staff breaks a tile?

This is a tricky one because if you hire someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing, anytime they cause damage or break tiles while cleaning your gutters they are likely to hide the damage as they have no way of fixing it. Though this rarely ever happens, if a Porter Vac gutter cleaner was to cause absolutely any damage to your roof tiles we have the experience and skill set to fix it immediately. If you do not have any replacement tiles on hand we will do a temporary fix and return within 48 hrs with the right tile to leave your roof as good as new. This is something you need to very careful of if using a handyman or gardener to clean your gutters.

Question # 5: What safety procedures do you follow?

You must ensure that the company you hire protects its staff and requires them to follow all industry safety standards. Porter Vac Gutter Clearers go through regular safety training and have all equipment on hand to safely tackle any job, so we don’t inconvenience you with multiple visits.

Question # 6: Will you clean up any mess that comes down from the roof?

You’d be surprised how many companies will clean out gutters and down pipes only to leave the mess strewn all over your property. Because we use high-powered vacuum suction technology we capture 99.9% of the mess we remove and then provide a thorough clean of any debris that we miss before leaving your premises.

Question # 7: What type of equipment do you use?

Some companies clean by hand, some use blowers or pressure cleaners, and some use vacuum suction technology. We have developed our own cutting edge, high power vacuum gutter cleaners that are specially designed to capture the maximum amount of dirt, leaves and debris of any machine on the market.

Question # 8: Do you provide a fixed price quote upfront?

You want to know exactly what you are paying before you start. Many times the price a company quotes on their website or over the phone is not what you will pay in the end. When providing quotes over the phone I aim to get as much information as possible about the property, roof access, roof pitch and an estimate of the amount of build up in your gutters. I then inspect the property roof using Google Maps so that the price I quote over the phone is the price you pay in over 95% of cases. Then on arriving at your property we will do an initial inspection to confirm the quote and fix the price you pay before beginning work.

Question # 9: What type of payment do you accept?

This is a simple one that is often overlooked as many companies will arrive at you house and only be able to accept cash. Porter Vac offers our clients 3 easy payment options on the day of service. Cash, Cheque or EFT. You now know much more than the average property owner about how to protect your gutters and choose a quality company to clean them.

3 Tips To Keep Your Gutters Clean And Flowing Properly!

Tip #1: Cut away trees that hang over gutters

By simply trimming back branches that hang directly over your gutters you’ll eliminate a large % of leaves and twigs that block gutters and downpipes. A simple monthly “Check and Trim” is all that is needed.

Tip #2: Monitor the amount of dirt and debris that is in your gutters

“Out of site, out off mind” may work for some things but in the case of your roofs guttering, what you can’t see could end up costing you thousands of dollars in damage and repairs. By doing a quick check from the ground you can usually see if there are any major build up, but often you’ll need someone to properly inspect your roofs guttering system to protect yourself from the hidden dangers.

Tip #3: Save money with a regular professional vacuum gutter clean

Prevention is always cheaper, less time consuming and less stressful than paying for repairs after your gutters are completely blocked and start to leak into your roof and eaves causing major property damage. A professional vacuum gutter clean is very affordable and will ensure that your down pipes and gutters are completely free for dirt, debris and leaves, which cause blockages, rust and corrosion in your guttering.

4 Costly Mistakes Property Owners Make Regarding Roof Guttering

Mistake #1: Waiting for gutters to start overflowing before getting them cleaned

By the time your gutters are overflowing in heavy rainfall it is already to late. There is every chance that water has already found its way into your roof, eaves and plaster boards, which can cost thousand of dollars to repair. By doing regular checks and having a professional vacuum gutter clean every 6 months you will protect your investment.

Mistake #2: Not checking gutters after heavy storms or powerful winds

We all get busy, especially when bad weather hits there can be a number of extra duties you need to attend to around the home. But this is exactly the time when you need to make sure your roof and guttering has held up as it should and there are no potential problems waiting to burst. After heavy storms or powerful winds you must examine your roof or have a professional come and give you peace of mind that everything is working fine.

Mistake #3: Hiring the lowest price company

You may be thinking of taking the cheapest option, but there are two important points you need to consider… Point #1: The price that is offered on the website or Ad may not include all the services you want or need to be performed. You must decide exactly what you want accomplish before you select a company. If you simply want to get rid of some of the leaves on your roof there are many companies who will come in with a leaf blower and clean out the easy to reach blockages. If you want a deep down clean that really clears out downpipes, collects all grime and muck in those hard to reach places and provides a long lasting solution, then you need to be careful when selecting a company based on price.
Point #2: The price you are quoted may not be the price you pay I take no pleasure in saying this but there are still some unethical companies in our industry that will promote ridiculously low prices just to get into your home and then once they have started all the extra charges (for things that should be included anyway) start popping up. When you work with a reputable company such as Porter Vac, you’ll know exactly how much you will pay and exactly what services you’ll receive before one minute of work begins.

Mistake #4: Using gutter guards (covers that go over your gutter)

Many gutter guard products have entered the market over the years and I am yet to find one that can do a complete job in protecting your house from rust, corrosion and water damage. Many of the cheaper brands have large grates that capture more debris than they remove and are also not UV rated, so after a few months in the elements they begin to disintegrate. Even the more expensive systems (some very expensive), which can be difficult to install are great a keeping leaves out of your gutter, but the other 60% of dirt, grime, twigs and debris simply slips through the cracks and start to breakdown in your gutters, causing rust and corrosion that you cannot see because of the guard. I am called out every week to repair problems caused by gutter guards purchased from companies who don’t stand behind their products. In fact many of these products require you have your roofs professionally pressure cleaned every 6 months to receive their warranty (which ends up costing more that getting your gutters cleaned professionally in the first place.) In my 17-years in the roofing industry the only gutter protection system I’ve seen that works is to have your gutters regularly cleaned by a professional vacuum gutter cleaner.

Misconceptions About Gutter Cleaning

Misconception #1: My handyman or gardener can do just as good a job as a professional gutter cleaner

Many maintenance, handyman and even roofing companies offer gutter cleaning as a side service. This means it is not their specialty. They do not do this work “Day in, Day out” and do not have the right tools, experience and safety equipment to do a fast, thorough and safe job on your property. In fact many of these companies charge much more because it takes them a lot longer to do an inferior job because they do not have the right equipment on hand.

Misconception #2: I can remove leaves safely from a ladder

Working from a ladder is the cause of countless numbers of workplace and home-related injuries in Australia. If you are not trained and qualified to work safely on a tile roof, trying to clean your gutters from a ladder is not a recommended alternative. You or your family member can do a lot of damage to both yourself and your property, and the time you spend pulling out muck and grime by hand from every crevasse and downpipe can quickly eat up your whole weekend.

Misconception #3: One form of gutter cleaning is just as good as another

Many professional gutter cleaning services still use a pressure cleaner or leaf blower to clean out your gutters. In most cases this causes more mess and more long term damage than if you did nothing at all. Pressure cleaners and leaf blowers not only cause an enormous mess around your property; they also push the majority of the leaves and dirt straight into your downpipes causing even more blockage. Vacuum Technology gutter cleaning captures 99.9% of mess and can get deep into your downpipes for a really thorough clean. Porter Vac have developed our own gutter specific high power, high performance vacuums to provide the most thorough clean of any company in the industry.

Misconception #4: Having the right equipment is all a gutter cleaning company needs.

Yes…having the right equipment is important. But training and experience in the use of that equipment is what separates a gutter clean that captures only the visible dirt and debris in your gutters from a clean that sucks deep into your downpipes, gets in and under tiles, and removes 99.9% of mould, leaves, dirt and grime from your entire guttering system. All our technicians at Porter Vac are qualified roof tilers and have had specialist training in the use and maintenance of our high power vacuum gutter cleaners.

Misconception #5: If my gutters cause water damage my insurance will cover it

This most definitely is not always the case. In my 17 years in the roofing industry I have seen many cases when insurance companies refused to pay for water damage because it was deemed that blocked and dirty guttering was the cause of the problem. Protect yourself from nasty and expensive surprises by checking your insurance policy and having your gutters professionally cleaned on a regular basis.

Importance of Cleaning Gutters Regularly by a Professional

Vacuum gutter cleaning is the most inexpensive and effective way of maintaining the value and appearance of your home. With some professional gutter cleaning services, you will be able to clear all the problems in your house such as roof leaks, damages from insects and other animals and some foundation problems. Roof gutters are essential when you have a compound that is full of tall trees. However, a big challenge comes when deciding whether homeowners should clean their gutters by themselves or seek the expertise of a professional gutter cleaning service. Although the task of cleaning a gutter may seem so simple and easy, it has so many challenges that require the support of professionals in that field. The following are the importance of seeking the services of professionals in gutter cleaning as compared to doing it yourself.

Professional vacuum gutter cleaning comes with knowledge and experience in cleaning your gutter. Different houses and gutters have different architectural designs. This can be challenging when it comes to cleaning a gutter. When you involve a professional gutter cleaning service, you not only employ them but also sign in to a wide range of gutter cleaning experience and knowledge. The professional vacuum gutter cleaning service will know the most efficient approach to your gutter and can install and repair gutters immediately where necessary. They are also able to discover even smaller problems that might end up causing more extra costs in future. A professional vacuum gutter cleaning service will have all the replacement tools to fix all the problems other than taking a very short period of time to clean your gutter.

Cleaning roof gutters is a very dangerous activity hence it involves some safety precautions. Buildings are of different kinds, and accessing a gutter involves climbing very long ladders and leaning dangerously to clean tough to reach areas and downspouts. Professional gutter cleaners know how to take all the necessary precautionary measures and cautiously climb the ladder and clean the required places. Seeking the expertise of a professional roof gutter cleaning service will save you money, time and pain.

Property considerations are other important factors to look at when cleaning roof gutters. Do you really know how to clean a roof gutter without damaging the gutter system? What if you lose your balance in the process of removing clog and knock some shingles off? What will happen to you if you pull some parts of roof gutter as you remove some leaves and twigs? Apart from cleaning your gutter well, a professional gutter cleaning company knows how to do their job well without causing damages on your home. And in case of damage in your property, you will be able to get some insurance compensation from the company’s insurance
